President Donald Trump introduces US Circuit Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh as his nominee to the United States Supreme Court

Bush a third time to the D.C. Court of Appeals and confirmed on a 57-36 vote. The full Senate must approve Kavanaugh's nomination before he can replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement at the end of June.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer vowed an all-out battle against Kavanaugh, but senators in his party can not block Kavanaugh's confirmation if no Republicans break ranks.

In the middle are a half-dozen or so moderate lawmakers who have staked out a position on the fence, with promises to conduct a rigorous review of Kavanaugh's record and carefully consider his qualifications.

Heading into Monday night, Washington girded for a fierce battle of perception over Trump's selection, given that Democrats probably lack the numbers in the Senate to thwart the nomination.

"Evangelicals are singing 'Hallelujah!" "Where we have leverage is with senators who call themselves pro-life".

Her group is paying for hundreds of canvassers to knock on doors in states with close Senate races to mobilize voters for the midterm elections. While refusing to answer whether he believed Roe was correctly decided during his confirmation hearing for the DC Circuit, once on the bench he wrote that his colleagues had "badly erred" by determining that an undocumented immigrant teen should have access to an abortion.

"Kavanaugh has said that a sitting president should not be criminally indicted, no matter what evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered", Gupta said in a statement.

Liberal groups were equally passionate in their opposition.

On Monday evening, Kavanaugh said he was "humbled" to have been selected by Trump. Fox News was a close second to CBS past year when Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch in a similar prime-time show, but that was on a winter night when many CBS viewers were probably anticipating a new episode of "NCIS".

Kavanaugh has attracted the most attention for his view that presidents shouldn't be bothered with legal inquiries.

Pence didn't directly respond when asked if he would be disappointed if Kavanaugh does not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion. He wrote that the high court has "held that the government may further those interests so long as it does not impose an undue burden on a woman seeking an abortion".

Citing a previous high court ruling, Kavanaugh went on to say, "It follows from Heller's protection of semi-automatic handguns that semi-automatic rifles are also constitutionally protected and that DC's ban on them is unconstitutional".

Photos are circulating on Twitter of pre-made signs emblazoned with the names of other constitutional scholars on Trump's short list.

Santorum added that picking Hardiman could help Trump bolster his support in Pennsylvania, a crucial state in his electoral college victory in 2016 and a 2020 battleground. It also highlighted another dissent written by Kavanaugh that argued the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive mandate violated the rights of religious organizations, "even though those organizations were granted an accommodation that allowed them to opt out of" contraceptive coverage.

"I'm convinced if the president gave every American five million dollars, the left would still oppose him", Hannity said. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.).

"It's not the pick conservatives had hoped for", Darling said. But they have to keep their own GOP members in line.

"That's how she votes", he said.

Cory Booker calls efforts to block Kavanaugh "the most important fight of our lifetimes".

The committee's chairman, Sen.
