"I hate losing. That's no secret", the 23-times major victor said after digging deep to deny Camila Giorgi a famous victory with a rousing 3-6 6-3 6-4 quarter-final comeback win over the unseeded Italian. The camera caught Drake in what appeared to be wildly different moods as the match progressed - from mad, happy, concerned and even pensive.

Though she was able to halt Williams' momentum and a run of four successive games, Giorgi could not prevent her from forcing a third set, the 36-year-old letting out a huge roar as she clinched the second.

Williams dropped her first set at this tournament as the 52nd-ranked Giorgi produced an impressive display of power and accuracy in the opener.

At the Royal Wedding - 'I've known Meghan for years!'

But I feel like he has the right to do whatever he wants to do. Ostapenko started slowly in her 7-5, 6-4 win over Cibulkova, while Kerber suffered four breaks against Kasatkina-three of which came in succession at the close of the second set. "I do follow women's tennis", she said pointedly.

"I went for it", Williams said of the serve afterward.

But this nerveless comeback was a sight familiar to all who have admired Williams' warrior instincts throughout a Wimbledon career stretching back 20 years.

Kerber, runner-up at the All England Club two years ago, as well as the 2016 Australian Open and US Open victor, looks on a mission to atone for a disappointing season in the slams in 2017. Suddenly, Williams looks as great as the eight Wimbledon titles suggest she is. "I still have a long way to go to be where I was".

Told she is guaranteed of rising to 51st next week - and higher if she reaches the final or wins the championship - Williams joked: "Got to keep trekking on, though".

In doing so, Williams extended her unbeaten streak at Wimbledon to 19 matches and set up a semifinal meeting with 13th seed Julia Goerges of Germany, who dismissed good friend Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.

"It's pretty unreal for me", said Goerges, who reached her first major semifinal at a tournament where she exited in the first round each of the past five years.

Goerges' win kept alive the possibility of Wimbledon staging an all-German women's final on Saturday as twice major victor Angelique Kerber takes on Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the other semi.

Her dance of delight signalled the end of Giorgi's threat as Williams raced to the finish line.

Giorgi went into the match having served the most double faults in the tournament and duly committed one in the first game, but recovered her composure to save it with a scintillating cross-court forehand.
