Israel warns Syrians approaching Golan frontier

The government is now in control of more than four-fifth of that province's territory, the monitor said.

On Sunday, the first batch of armed fighters and their families left the city of Daraa, the provincial capital, in buses that would take them to the rebel-held Idlib province in the north.

It said the regime forces had taken control of Al Haara hill in the second day of a major offensive to seize remaining parts of southwest Syria in rebel hands that are close to the border with Israel. Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking alongside US President Donald Trump on Monday, cited the need to restore the situation along the Golan borders to the state that prevailed before the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011. Syria is expected to feature highly on the agenda.

Syrian rebels and Iranian-backed negotiators have reached a deal to evacuate thousands of people from two rebel-besieged Shi'ite villages in northwestern Syria, in return for the release of hundreds of detainees in state prisons.

HTS jihadists are not included in a ceasefire between regime and rebels in Daraa announced earlier this month, which has allowed the regime to retake control of more than 90 percent of the province. But, opposition forces later denied the report.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government forces fired more than 800 missiles at an area between northern Daraa and the Quneitra countryside, about 4 kilometres, or 2.5 miles, from the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Putin also stressed that Iranian troops are not present in the de-escalation zone in southern Syria, noting that the presence of Iranian advisers in Syria came upon a request of the Syrian government.

In remarks to the Israeli cabinet, Netanyahu said that in a phone conversation on Saturday he and Trump discussed "security and diplomatic issues arising from regional developments, chiefmost among them, of course, Syria and Iran".
