Redding Home Loss Tops 1000; Mendocino Complex Still Growing

Especially during the months of summer, California is subject to a whole season of wildfires, and a high number of fires often take place.

The worst of that was the "rotation updraft" reported earlier this week at the Carr fire front in which a vortex of fire and smoke similar to a tornado is formed, pulling up and spraying out burning embers and other fire debris.

Smoke rises above Clear Lake as the River Fire (Mendocino Complex) burns near Lakeport, California, U.S. August 1, 2018.

A vehicle was apparently responsible for creating a spark in the area of American Highway 299 and Carr Powerhouse Road, in Whiskeytown. Crews are mopping up burned areas on the southern end of the fire.

Fire officials say a massive blaze in Northern California that has killed six people and torched more than 1,000 homes grew overnight, fueled by wind.

Its nearest town is Redding, where the fire was able to spread after "jumping" a local river.

More than 13,000 firefighters are battling blazes statewide with the help of crews from as far away as Florida. The fire was nearly 35 percent contained, and thousands of residents were allowed to return to their neighborhoods. It is believed to be in the top 10 on the list of most destructive fires in the state's history.

The two Mendocino Complex fires cover 95,000 acres in Mendocino and Lake counties.

Firefighters are focused on the northwest end of the Carr Fire, particularly on the Shasta-Trinity county lines.

The Carr Fire has destroyed more than 1,546 structures in and around Redding, a city of 90,000 people about 160 miles (260 km) north of the state capital, Sacramento.

The proclamation gives the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) control over coordinating the relief efforts for Shasta County.

Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders because of the fire, which has killed six people, including two firefighters, and leveled almost 500 buildings, according to officials.

Governor Brown ordered that state flags were to be lowered to half mast to honour the fallen men.
