IPL friendships won't matter in Test series, says Jos Buttler

Chelmsford is too hot for India's cricketers!

The 27-year-old was recalled to the Test line-up purely on the strength of some impressive batting displays in this season's Twenty20 IPL, with new England selection chief Ed Smith convinced the dynamic form he showed in India would transfer into the Test-match arena.

India last won a test series in England in 2007, while the hosts are looking for their first series win in four.

"Someone like Virat Kohli is an immensely talented guy but also watching him go about it you see that mentality of getting to the top", he explained. If England makes a 5-0 sweep, then they will jump to second on the table with a 10-point rise to 107 points, reducing the pre-series gap with top-ranked India from 28 points to just five points.

Boria Majumdar, a top Indian cricket analyst, also backed Kohli to shine in England.

W.G. Grace only played 22 Tests, the last of which in 1899, but is one of the sport's most influential figures, while Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart occupy numbers two and three on England's run-scoring charts.

"There are a few guys I have played with", said Buttler. "I feel like I have learnt a hell of a lot from watching guys train and go about their practice, ways they react to certain pressure moments in a game as well", he added.

Indian captain Virat Kohli brushed off talk of having to prove his batting ability on English soil ahead of the five-match test series against the hosts starting at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

"It is the ultimate aim, I would love to achieve that feat", he said.

"On behalf of the cricket family, I want to congratulate England on their 1000th men's Test match, the first country to reach this milestone", ICC chairman Shashank Manohar said in a statement.

India's Cheteshwar Pujara is sixth, followed by Lokesh Rahul 18th, Ajinkya Rahane 19th, Murali Vijay 23rd and Shikhar Dhawan 24th, while England's Joe Root is ranked third (48 points behind Kohli), Alistair Cook 13th, Jonny Bairstow 16th, Ben Stokes 28th and Moeen Ali 43rd. Naturally, you have friendships with them, but on the field they seem to be forgotten and everyone is competitive. "There is a lot more familiarity between the sides than there ever has been before", he further added.

"It will be highly competitive", he said.

England have dominated India since their first Test in June 1932, winning 43 and losing 25 out of a total of 117 Tests.

"Absolutely, it is a huge series. A confident team like India shouldn't decide its playing XI on the basis of performances in the practice match", Ganguly told IndiaTV.
