The pop superstar mourned her friend Rick Genest - who rose to fame as the star of Gaga's "Born This Way" music video - on Twitter Thursday, describing his death as "beyond devastating".

Lady Gaga has said the death of her Born This Way co-star is "beyond devastating" as she called for improved awareness around mental health.

Rick Genest, a model and artist known also as "Zombie Boy" has died at the age of 32. If you suffer, call family or friend today.

It has been reported that Montreal Police found the model dead in his apartment. Cause of death is yet to be confirmed, but Gaga has commented since with regards to mental health.

"Zombie Boy, RICO, was loved by everyone who had the chance to know and meet him.... the legend will follow the human", the post read in part. The post paid tribute to Genest, calling him an "icon of the artistic scene" who "charmed everybody's hearts".

Over the years, Genest walked the runway for Thierry Mugler, appeared in fashion magazines like GQ and Vanity Fair, and made his name in a plethora of other modeling gigs.

Genest was also a musician who had worked on several rock-n-roll dubstep tracks, collaborating with music and film producer Rob Zombie.

In an interview with The Mirror in 2016, he revealed he had been diagnosed with a brain tumour aged 15, and had been told he could die or be left disfigured. By drawing on the body he even got into the Guinness Book of records as the man with the most tattoos in the form of bones and insects.

Getty Lady Gaga reacted to the death of her friend and Canadian model Rick "Zombie Boy" Ganest, urging fans to "save each other".

From Paris to Milan, Berlin and NY, the model appeared in a growing number of fashion shows, notably for Thierry Mugler and for singer Jay-Z's ready-to-wear collection. Yet Mental Health America has research statistics that only one-in-five people will report an unmet mental health need.
