Charges against Najib in line with rule of law, says Hishammuddin

Malaysia's former prime minister Najib Razak arrives for a court appearance in Kuala Lumpur

In July, Najib was charged at the High Court here on three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and one charge under the MACC Act, in his capacity as prime minister, finance minister and adviser emeritus of SRC International, in which he was entrusted with the RM4 billion. Asked if he understood them, Najib - dressed in a dark blue suit and looking exhausted - said he did.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has pleaded not guilty to new money laundering charges related to the alleged multibillion-dollar looting of the 1MDB state investment fund.

Abuse of power and breach of trust carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each charge.

On the three charges, Najib is alleged to have received RM27 million, RM5 million and RM10 million, respectively, which were proceeds from unlawful activities, via Real Time Electronic Transfer of Funds and Securities (Rentas) into two AmIslamic Bank Berhad accounts of his bearing the numbers 2112022011880 and 2112022011906.

The charges were read out before Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali in Malay, to which the former premier pleaded not guilty on Wednesday (Aug 8).

Each money-laundering count carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of not less than five times the sum laundered.

Najib was slapped with fresh charges of receiving RM27mil, RM5mil and RM10mil, which were allegedly obtained from illegal activities, into his bank accounts in three separate transactions.

The case was earlier heard before Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi, who allowed the prosecution's application to transfer the case to the High Court. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released after posting bail, but his passport was held.

Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor led a life of luxury, allegedly funded by stolen public money, that came to symbolise the rot in an elite that had ruled the country uninterrupted since Malaysia´s independence from Britain in 1957. He was dressed in a grey suit and sat in the dock looking calm. Najib has been charged in court as part of an investigation into missing money at scandal-tainted state fund 1MDB.

Najib founded 1MDB almost a decade ago and was at the head of its advisory board.
