It all happened in a flash which is why it is difficult to make out whether the ball richoted off the tree in front of him or Anderson sliced the ball so hard that it hit him on the face.

But following the nasty incident, Anderson's England team-mate Broad saw the amusing side of things.

The world number one Test bowler ended up hitting himself with the ball while attempting a shot.

The duo recently featured in England's 31-run win over India in the first of the five-match Test series.

On the other hand, Stuart Broad set the tone for England in the second innings by dismissing India openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan cheaply.

England will be hoping Anderson's injury doesn't affect him ahead of the second Test with India at Lord's, beginning on Thursday. The world number one Test batsman and the world number one Test bowler will square off against each other again in the second Test which gets underway at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground on August 9.

England will already be missing Ben Stokes for the Lord's Test as the all-rounder as the all-rounder is expected to appear at Bristol Crown Court today over charges of affray following a the much-talked-about street brawl outside a nightclub last September.

England Test squad: Joe Root (c), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Jamie Porter.
