A team of former Dota 2 pros just got owned by AI bots

At a recent battle between the human players and the bot, the team of human players managed to win just one game from the artificially intelligent bot, Cnet reported.

OpenAI's 1v1 bot beat pro player Danil "Dendi" Ishutin at last year's The International, and the institute says the learning process for OpenAI Five is much more complex, requiring 256 GPUs and 128,000 CPU cores.

OpenAI, which has been in development as a Dota 2 bot since The International 7 previous year, went up against a full team of five highly-skilled human players-composed of Ioannis "Fogged" Loucas, William "Blitz" Lee, Ben "Merlini" Wu, David "MoonMeander" Tan, and Austin "Capitalist" Walsh.

The latest victory for OpenAI Five is a positive step towards the firm's goal of competing against the best proteamat The International which is the largest annual Dota tournament in the world.

A lot of humans think they're so good at video games that they make the point of describing themselves as "gamers".

Team Human did squeeze out a win in the third match, but not without some strings attached.

Every member of Team Human were selected on the criteria of being within the 99th percentile of players, which makes sense considering that majority used to be active pro players. The team of bots calculated a 2.9% chance of winning before the start of the game based on its heroes' lineup.

While OpenAI's defeat of some of Dota 2's cream of the crop players is decidedly impressive, what's definitely more noteworthy is the unprecedented advancement of artificial intelligence itself.

If you're interested, it's worth reading OpenAI's blog post on the challenges its Five team faces, including the complex rules of Dota 2, and the fact that, at any given time, a hero could have more than 100,000 possible actions open to them.

The humans won the final game, but only after the audience was allowed to select the bots' player characters, which put them at a significant advantage. OpenAI is scheduled to face an active professional squad at The International 8, which kicks off on August 15.

After losing to OpenAI Five, Capitalist Walsh expressed his despair in a tweet.

The blog added, "We've increased the reaction time of OpenAI Five from 80ms to 200ms".
