Sergey Kovalev faces a tough challenger in Eleider "Storm" Alvarez

Alvarez stuns Kovalev to seize WBO light heavyweight title

Saturday, August 4 in Atlantic city (new Jersey, USA) in the arena of "Hard Rock Hotel" was fighting for the WBO belt at light heavyweight between the Russian Sergey Kovalev (32 wins, 28 of them by knockout, 2 losses, 1 draw) and Baderom Alvarez from Colombia (23 wins, 11 of them by knockout).

It was the first major fight in once-boxing heavy Atlantic City since Kovalev's dominant decision win to unify three world titles against Bernard Hopkins at Boardwalk Hall in November 2014, but this time he was on the other end of it as Alvarez scored the impressive finish. "We don't have the opportunity to make a World Boxing Super Series", Kovalev said.

Alvarez is likely to have every intention to take this fight late, but in order to come out on top he must have a good work rate early - to avoid giving up a large advantage - and will need to bring Kovalev out of his comfort zone, make him use those legs, while countering away and targeting the mid-section when Kovalev is inevitably right in front of him.

"We slowed him a bit and I felt his punches weren't as hard as they were at the beginning of the fight", Alvarez said.

Kovalev was taken to the hospital after the fight to receive medical treatment.

Despite trailing on all three scorecards, "Storm" Alvarez knocked down Kovalev three times to become the new WBO light heavyweight champion.

"Sergey seems to gas out after six rounds", said Kathy Duva, Kovalev's promoter.

Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) started off fast and utilized his elite boxing skill to keep Kovalev off balance. But in my head, I have a schedule of my tournament.

Meanwhile, the result derails plans for a light heavyweight unification bout between Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol, who retained his World Boxing Association belt with a unanimous decision over Isaac Chilemba on the same card. At one point Alvarez tried to trade, and all he got out of it was bloodied. I assume he got exhausted. "I saw a couple rounds in a couple of fights", he said.

Kovalev has now been knocked out in two of his three defeats. After all, Alvarez was amid a 13-month layoff because Stevenson hasn't faced him despite being Alvarez his mandatory challenger for some sanctioning organization or another - starting back in 2015 (!) - a reminder that, when convenient for the wallets of the powerful, nobody is really forced to do anything by these fraudulent outfits.

"As fight went on I wanted to show that I could stay strong and do good things", Alvarez said. "I$3 just missed one punch and [I] couldn't continue the fight".

According to CompuBox statistics, Kovalev landed 91 of 339 punches (27 percent) and Alvarez connected with 73 of 251 (29 percent).

Bivol did his part, easily outpointing Chilemba (25-6-2, 10 KOs) in the co-feature, but Kovalev didn't do his.

But while Alvarez is ready for his meeting with destiny, having it come in the form of a beast like Kovalev certainly won't help his cause. "And the best fighters in the world".
