Sirens were sounded in several Israeli areas close to the border with Gaza, warning residents to seek immediate shelter, the Israeli army said.

Military and Defence Correspondent for the Jerusalem Post, Anna Ahronheim said: "A 34-year-old is in light to moderate condition with wounds from glass shards and a 20-year-old in a light condition with injuries to limbs".

A Hamas militant was killed in one strike, with at least 12 others injured, the health ministry in Gaza said.

The rocket fire also comes as a senior Hamas official said United Nations and Egyptian mediated ceasefire talks between the terror group and Israel have reached "advanced stages" and a deal was expected to be signed soon.

Israeli media reported several residents of Sderot and other border towns were wounded by rocket fire.

Smoke plumes could be seen rising from Gaza City following the military's announcement it was targeting "terror sites in the Gaza Strip".

There are also reports that the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has carried out drone strike on multiple locations in Gaza, but this is unconfirmed.

Eight rockets were fired from Gaza and four fell into Sderot settlement.

Yesterday, an IDF tank shelled a Hamas observation post along the Gaza border, which killed two terrorists, after an attack by Hamas snipers.

Meanwhile, an official from the Islamist Gaza Strip government told Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency on Wednesday that Hamas may be ready to reach an agreement toward a truce with Israel.

Israeli forces have launched three military assaults on the Gaza Strip since 2008.

The Swedes were all activists from the "Ship to Gaza" group who were attempting to break Israel's blockade and bring supplies including medical equipment to Gaza, while the remaining five people on the boat included three crew members from Canada, France and Germany, and two British journalists.

The strikes came after two fighters from the military wing of Hamas, which rules Gaza, were killed by Israeli fire on Tuesday.

The Israel Defense Forces Twitter account said its fighter jets had targeted more 140 strategic sites, including a weapons manufacturing and storage facility.

Later, Palestinians fired about 70 rockets across the border, and Israeli aircraft struck at least a dozen militant targets. The IDF later suggested the incident was a misunderstanding, as the tank returned fire in response to the shots fired as part of a ceremony of the al-Qassam Brigades, which were not deliberately aimed at Israeli soldiers, Haaretz reported.
