Blues Set to Break World Record for Courtois Replacement

"La Liga has confirmed to us that Kepa Arrizabalaga has fulfilled the requirements for the unilateral termination of his contract with Athletic Club", said Bilbao in a statement.

The Blues broke the world-record fee for a goalkeeper by signing Arrizabalaga, but who exactly is the 23-year-old?

Chelsea have given Kepa Arrizabalaga a seven-year contract worth around £70 million after making him the world's most expensive goalkeeper.

Courtois did not report for Chelsea training this week in an attempt to force a move away from Stamford Bridge, prompting the Blues to scramble around for a replacement and swiftly identify Kepa as their preferred target.

Courtois spent three years on loan at Atlético Madrid from Chelsea, before becoming Chelsea's No 1 in 2014-15.

Chelsea open their Premier League campaign at Huddersfield on Saturday, having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend.

Upon completing his move to Chelsea, Kepa said: "It's a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life". Mario Stanić was the first, followed by goalkeeper Matej Delač, striker Stipe Perica, and offensive midfielder Marijo Pašalić, though they have all been sent out on loan from The Blues.

Just seven months ago, Kepa's buyout clause was just 20 million euros and it was he who looked set to join Real Madrid in January. After playing for Inter Milan and Real Madrid, Kovačić's stint at Chelsea will make him the fifth Croatian footballer in history to wear the jersey of the London club.

And thus, Kepa's move to Chelsea was triggered by Courtois leaving for Real Madrid, the very club that very almost prised the Spain global from Athletic in the first place. Transfer fee for the Belgian's move has not been disclosed by the clubs.
