The Day After Trump Admits to Attempted Collusion, Rand Paul Invites Russian Delegation to Washington

A United States senator who met with Russian lawmakers in Moscow said he invited them to visit Washington and they accepted Monday. We have invited members of the foreign affairs committee of Russian Federation to come to the United States to meet with us in Washington.

"We've also agreed, if it can be arranged, to meet as well in a neutral country with all of our committees", Paul said.

"I think it would be a very big mistake not to have open lines of communication", Paul said.

Among the Russian senators sitting across from Paul was Moscow's former ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, whose meetings with members of the Trump campaign provoked uproar in 2016.

After meeting with Paul for an hour, Kosachev publicly reiterated that Russian Federation was not involved in election meddling. "We will continue our conversation with our American counterparts tomorrow on these and other most likely regional issues of the global agenda", Slutsky said, according to Russian state media.

The Republican senator and ally of US President Donald Trump said he had travelled to the Russian capital to encourage diplomacy amid tense relations between Moscow and Washington.

The senator, once a foe of the president, has emerged as a unique and somewhat renegade voice, coming as both Republicans and Democrats criticize Trump for not taking a tougher stance against Russian Federation.

"The conversation with U.S. politicians was about resuming close cooperation between the Russian Federal Assembly and the U.S. Congress", Slutsky told reporters after the meeting.

Kosachev said the visit is especially valuable as some USA representatives are attempting to treat all contacts with Russian politicians as toxic ones.

"I am one who believes in more engagement, that we need to have more cultural exchange, more exchange between our legislative bodies, more open lines of communication", Paul said.

"Of course, Mr. Paul is yet to discuss these ideas with his colleagues after returning to Washington", Kosachyov said.

Trump was criticized after the summit with Putin for supporting the Russian leader's denial Moscow was involved in meddling in the 2016 US election.

"We had general discussions about a lot of issues", Paul responded.
