Could the Green Bay Packers Really Trade for Khalil Mack?

NFL Rumors

Star defensive end Khalil Mack hasn't been with the Oakland Raiders since the 2017 season ended against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 31.

It would be a tough pill to swallow, but a trade that could make sense for both teams is Khalil Mack for LaMarcus Joyner, and the Rams sending at least a first-round draft pick in addition.

Whether or not the two have spoken to each other is a separate issue, since Mack's contract remains the main concern among Raiders fans.

Khalil Mack #52 of the Oakland Raiders scores after intercepting Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers in the second quarter of their National Football League game on November 27, 2016 in Oakland, California.

If you take a look around the internet, you will see that there are really no experts out there who expect the Oakland Raiders to be any good this season.

If the Rams want, they could put together a defensive front that includes Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack for the foreseeable future, and Ndamukong Suh at least for this season. Mack has been selected to three pro bowls, he has two first team all-pro selections, he was the AP Defensive player of the year in 2016, and was named an all-pro at both defensive end as well as outside linebacker in 2015. Mike Pettine would be able to deploy Mack in multiple packages and feel confident that he will be the best player on the field and turn the Packers defense into a championship caliber unit. They want to line him up inside but they're also trying to work him, see if he might find some mismatches or can bring something to that defense as an edge rusher too. Gutekunst acquired an extra first-round pick in next year's draft, and the Packers have tens of millions coming off the salary cap next offseason. He is set to make $13,846,000 under the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.

For these reasons, I believe that the Packers should enter into serious negotiations with the Raiders if Mack is indeed on the trade block.
