Israel issued a stern message to Hamas against further violence as a shaky calm appeared to descend upon the Gaza border late Thursday night. Hundreds of people took part in the funeral for the woman and child on Thursday.
As Israel was striking a Hamas headquarters in Gaza, the cabinet convened at 6 p.m.at IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv. He was identified as 30-year-old Ali al-Ghandour.
Israeli air forces pounded the Gaza Strip overnight, targeting over 100 sites in the besieged coastal enclave.
The Israeli military said it struck some 200 targets throughout Gaza, including Hamas command posts and weapons production and storage facilities.
Most of the rockets fired by Palestinian militants landed in open areas, but at least two hit the Israeli town of Sderot near the Gaza Strip and sirens sounded throughout the night and into the morning.
Israeli aircraft bombed a multi-story building in Gaza City on August 9, local residents said, a few hours after Palestinian militants fired a long-range rocket at Israel's largest southern city.
Earlier on Thursday, the IDF said in a statement its airstrike on the building in northern Gaza came in response to Hamas rocket fire that was launched deep inside Israeli territory.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Mondoweiss that they could not confirm the number of Israelis reportedly injured.
Israeli Army Radio said Palestinian militants had fired a Grad missile capable of reaching Israel's heartland.
"Let's not forget that Hamas bears ultimate responsibility for the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza".
Israel says it has been defending its sovereign border against infiltration attempts by Hamas.
The US envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt released the following statement on Twitter: "Hamas regime again is launching rockets at Israeli communities". This is the Hamas regime's choice.
Neither Greenblatt, the foreign ministry, nor the army made any mention of the killing of Inas Khimash and her daughter Bayan.
"The strike was carried out in response to the rockets fired by Hamas at Israel, one of which was sacked at the city of Be'er Sheva, which is more than 24 miles from Gaza", the IDF Spokesperson added. "It's duty to respond and break the occupation".
In a statement, Hamas added that they hold Israel responsible for the latest escalation and called for global intervention "to prevent the rapid escalation on the ground".
In Sderot, the Israeli city near the Gaza Strip, a gaping hole could be seen in front of a small, three-storey building.
"Everyday life in besieged Gaza is shaped by Israeli policy", IMEU added, posting a video compilation that captures the living conditions of millions of the almost two million people living in the occupied Gaza Strip. Those have hit a stumbling block as Hamas is insisting that the release include all prisoners who were part of a 2011 prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit but have since been rearrested, according to Palestinian officials, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the talks.
With fears of a new Israeli onslaught on the horizon, reports have emerged of the United Nations scrambling to negotiate a ceasefire.
"These incidents underscore the urgent need to work toward finding a lasting political solution for Gaza and to respond effectively to the humanitarian crisis affecting the Palestinian population", France said.
A Hamas militant was also killed in the overnight strikes and at least 12 others injured, the health ministry said.
"If current escalation, however, is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".
Israel captured Gaza in a 1967 war but withdrew in 2005, while holding onto most of the separate West Bank, where Palestinians have limited self-rule. Hamas wants an end to a decade-long Israeli-Egyptian border blockade as a condition for any long-term deal.
Gaza has often been compared to an "open air prison", and in 2015, the United Nations warned that the it could become "unlivable" by 2020 if nothing was done to improve the situation.
