Ben Stokes wishes England newcomer Ollie Pope well

Dawid Malan has lost his place in the England squad ahead of the second Test

Batsman Dawid Malan was dropped here in favour of 20-year-old debutant Ollie Pope.

"Everyone always says - if you're good enough, you're old enough".

"I've played quite a lot cricket here (at Lord's) and that's quite nice".

Pope received heavyweight backing this week when Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at the age of 16, applauded his call-up.

"I think it's the fearlessness", Pope said.

"You hear of stories of some of the greats in the game, people like Cook, when they made their debut". So it's not like it hasn't been done before.

Stokes said "matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene".

Smith added: 'Dawid has not found his best rhythm this season, and it may be that his game is better suited to overseas conditions'.

The last time England were at Lord's against Pakistan in May, Pope spent the first day of the Test around the team to get a feel for the worldwide set-up. "That guy's actually been over in London and watched a T20 while he was here but I was surprised by that as well". I had a flat tyre the day before so had to get a lift with a mate. But massively. I had to stand on my own two feet.

"From that moment I hardly remember the conversation, just that it was a good one".

Whatever style of bowling he is asked to confront first-up, Pope said that he doesn't suffer "massively" from nerves and this week he will practise his customary use of visualisation as a technique to overcome them.

"That is the conversation I had with Dawid yesterday - I spent a couple of hours with him face to face, and the message is very simple. I had an idea". With spin expected to play an increasingly prominent role in the series, that counted against him.

"He's not your regular off-spin". "He bowls a ball that swings away and one that swings back in".

"I know the hotel we'll stay in the night before - I know where I need to be and when I need to be there".

"I'll have a closer look before the game, if picked, and I'll have my game plan".

"Obviously it's a bit different when you're playing, it will pretty special walking out there if I get the nod".

They went into those three games on the back of wins against Middlesex and Essex last weekend, the first thanks to an astonishing display of power-hitting from Aaron Finch and Jason Roy. Surrey looked outsiders after Paul Stirling took advantage of being dropped off the first ball of the game to hammer 109 in 58 balls so that the visitors reached 221-5.

"When I bat at six I can be in in the 10th over or for the second new ball. Four to six region, I don't think there's a massive difference in the way you play".
