United, who finished second in the Premier League last term, brought in goalkeeper Lee Grant, defender Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred, but Mourinho is thought to have wanted a new centre-back and has openly criticised the club's failure to back him.

However, with the Premier League closing its window for incomings at 17:00 BST on Thursday - significantly earlier than Europe's other major leagues for the first time this year - Mourinho is under the impression United's business for 2018 is done.

United seemed intent on only replacing players who left rather than improving on the squad.

"I'm not confident", he told a pre-match news conference when asked whether another signing might be made. He worked amazingly well on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He's one of the players that I have to speak to see how physically and mentally he feels. We don't have many solutions and want to go with everything we have.

"We changed Daley Blind [returned to Ajax] for a 19-year-old kid [Dalot] that we believe has the potential to play right-back or left-back".

"In pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, it looked like I was saying something insane", he added.

Mourinho's comments seem a stark contrast to those which he reverberated during his side's pre-season tour of America - where he seemingly ruled out any chance of the younger members of his squad breaking into the first team during the upcoming campaign, insisted Anthony Martial should have spent less time with his newborn child and slammed fans for paying money to watch Manchester United play overseas. He's in the group of players who didn't have a pre season, it's as simple as that.

"When you repeat 1,000 times that my relationship with my players is not good, it's a lie, repeated 1,000 times is still a lie".

And the wait is finally over, as the Premier League is back tonight. Even though we have improved a lot, we need to keep improving.
