In fact, you can expect to see between fifty to a hundred meteors an hour in places where the sky is very dark.

Eight months ago, we delighted in the beauty of the Orionid meteor shower show. And if you're intrepid enough to travel to a dark sky park, here are some of the absolute best in the United States. The meteor shower's peak is expected to occur the night of Sunday, Aug. 12 into the wee hours of Monday morning.

According to the United States space agency, the Perseids are well known for their speed and brightness. If you happen to have trouble sleeping on Sunday night (August 12), that's a flawless time to step outside.

The showers are named after the constellation Perseus because the direction from which they come in the sky lies in the same radiant as Perseus.

The best viewing conditions can be found outside city limits, looking toward the northern horizon between the "Little Dipper" and the constellations Cassiopeia and Perseus.

"All you've got to do is go outside, find a nice dark spot, lie flat on your back and look up", Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, told Live Science previously.

Not only will the night sky be dark, but also clear, according to Matt Walters, a meteorologist with Topeka's National Weather Service. The ramp up to the peak begins overnight Friday into Saturday morning, but the greatest number of visible meteors comes over the weekend. Every August the Earth ploughs through the orbit of this comet sweeping up this dust at a closing speed of over 100,000 miles per hour and the tiny particles vaporise instantly from friction with the upper atmosphere. Scientists from NASA also said that camping out in the country can triple the amount of visible meteors.

"Relax, be patient, and let your eyes adapt to the darkness", Kelly Beatty, Sky & Telescope senior editor said in a statement.

Each time Swift-Tuttle passes through the warmth of the inner solar system, its frozen, 16-mile-wide nucleus releases debris along the comet's path - through which the Earth passes each summer.
