After rain washed out the opening day without a ball being bowled, England skipper Joe Root today won the toss and elected to field against India.

Woakes, whose two for 19 on Friday included the prize scalp of India captain Virat Kohli, followed Bairstow to the landmark in 71 balls with his seventh four.

India now trail 1-0 in the five-match Test series after a 31-run loss at Edgbaston.

After a delay of more than two hours, the players returned for 12 balls, during which Kohli and Pujara groped around trying to find the ball as Anderson and Stuart Broad terrorised them under leaden skies.

Captain Kohli hasn't played the same XI in successive Tests for 36 matches, dating back to the 2014 Adelaide Test in which he led India in whites for the first time in his career.

"We exploit those conditions as well as anyone in the world".

Having been bowled out for 107 on day two, India will have harboured hopes of at least limiting England's lead when they reduced the hosts to 89-4 at lunch.

Nothing doing: Rain clouds hang above the pitch at Lord's.

The first was the result of an absolutely stunning away swinger that bowled Murali Vijay off the fifth ball of the day.

Batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was run out by England debutant Ollie Pope, after a mix-up with Virat Kohli.

No sooner had Pujara been dismissed, then there was a fresh downpour and it was not until 5.10pm (1610 GMT) that the match re-started. But England " s batting has often proved fallible recently.

It was a similar story with Pandya, Woakes putting the disappointment of a dropped catch aside to strike with his very next ball.

Towards the end, tailender Mohammed Shami struck a few lusty blows to guide India to the three-figure mark before fellow quick Ishant Sharma (0) was trapped by Anderson.

It was the sixth time that Anderson has produced a five wicket haul at Lord's and he now has 99 Test wickets at the famous London venue.
