Discord to Start Selling Video Games

Compare this to Steam which boasts a user base of 125 million and suddenly you realize just how much clout and power Discord has with the gamer audience.

A new tab named the Discord Store will become available to those users-where individual games can be purchased-alongside a suite of free games, which will include the likes of Saints Row: The Third, System Shock Enhanced Edition, Metro: Last Light and Super Meat Boy at launch. After 90 days, the Indie game can then go on to other platforms.

"We've actually been mulling the idea for a long time", Resmini said.

"Today, the problem has flipped on its head". Of course, we think the games are really cool too! That is to say that it will allow anyone to purchase games at retail prices. Those in the beta will have an updated version of Nitro, which will include a selection of curated games for its Nitro subscribers.

However, the new store will be different from Steam's, which has become a platform where nearly anyone can sell a game. "As they describe it: "(It's) similar to one of those cozy neighborhood bookshops with recommendations about the hottest and newest games from us to you".

The actual store will feature Dead Cells, Frostpunk, Omensight, Into the Breach, SpellForce 3, The Banner Saga 3, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, Hollow Knight, Moonlighter, This is the Police 2, and Starbound. At launch, Discord doesn't have a ton of games, but that list is bound to grow over time.

With over 150 million users, Discord is the world's largest gaming chat platform. Games from indie publishers will also be sold through the platform.

The Discord Store's beta rollout starts small, however.

"Through Discord's lifetime, we've always been thinking about fun, additive, and cool ways we could build a business that's exciting and respects our players", Discord's announcement concludes. In a new post on the Discord Blog, the company announced the Discord Store, a way for gamers to get access to carefully and personally selected titles.

"Ultimately, we want to make it easier for you to play games and spend time with your friends".

The Store is pretty simplistic for now - there doesn't appear to be a way to search for games or organize them by category - and its current content line-up seems to be limited to indie titles.
