Barcelona defender Gerard Pique retires from Spain duty

A Spain World Cup victor has confirmed his retirement from worldwide football.

"I talked to him (Enrique) a week or two ago".

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique announces his retirement from worldwide duty with Spain, having won 102 caps for his country.

Pique had declared his intention to quit worldwide football after the 2018 World Cup following a qualifier against Albania in October 2016, when he said he was exhausted of criticism and wanted "to be left in peace".

The 31-year-old hinted prior to this summer's World Cup that the tournament would be his last for La Roja, and he has now officially announced that he will no longer make himself available for selection under new Spain boss Luis Enrique.

The outspoken Barcelona-born defender has never enjoyed the same rapport with Spain supporters as his worldwide team mates, and he has often been booed at games due to his repeated jibes at Real Madrid and his support for a referendum on Catalan independence.

"He called me and I told him that my decision was made some time ago".

Pique was an indisputable starter when Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.

"I'm very happy to have participated in all these successes, but now I want to focus on Barca".

Pique will continue playing for Barcelona, who begin their season against Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.
