Koepka leads PGA Championship after third round

Woodland is a three-time victor on the PGA Tour but has never won a major championship. Of course, any time Tiger is playing, he is going to dominate coverage (as he should), but this felt like we were just watching the two afternoon featured groups (Woods, McIlroy and Thomas, and Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and Keegan Bradley) on PGA.com.

And with halfway leader Gary Woodland making a triple bogey on the 10th after hitting from one bunker into another and then back again, Koepka found himself with a four-shot lead.

"Greens are receptive, so my 4-iron stops as quick as his 7-iron", Kisner said.

A 12-under 198 total still left Koepka within sight of his third major title in 14 months, but the two-times U.S. Open champion's grip on the Wanamaker Trophy had loosened.

Charl Schwartzel, Thomas Pieters and Dustin Johnson are all on -7 with Lowry.

"It seemed like that was the only way I was going to make birdie, hit it to tap-in distance or chip in", McIlroy said. "But at the same time, it can show its teeth if you're not driving it well".

What was particularly encouraging for the 14-time major victor was the fact that some of his best swings came late in the day, including a bullet four iron to the par five 17th that set up a presentable eagle chance.

"A little frustrated at this place in general", he said.

Only a three-putt bogey at the fifth hole halted his progress, though he put the setback quickly behind him to birdie the next three holes. It was his fourth round of 66 or better this year, including his third round at the British Open.

And it was only good for a one-shot lead over Kevin Kisner.

Asked what Furyk's reaction to all the birdies was, Finau said, "He didn't say anything, but he was just shaking his head. There's not a single putt out here that you're afraid of".

The course is playing soft with no wind and pristine greens, and that could mean record low scores this weekend. It was 141 at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001.

Eighth-ranked Webb Simpson, the vulnerable man in the qualifying hot seat, also advanced, so has a chance to take care of his own fate over the final two rounds.

"I wish my score was closer to the lead but not many guys are up there".

Five-time major victor Phil Mickelson failed in his bid to qualify on points for a 12th consecutive US Ryder Cup team on Saturday (Aug 11), missing the cut at the 100th PGA Championship.

Wallace has won twice on the European Tour this season but had missed the cut in his last four starts before working with psychologist Lee Crombleholme.

His absence from the final two rounds comes for the seventh time out of his last 11 starts and time is running out, with the qualification cut-off set on September 2, for the Spaniard to avoid requiring a captain's pick. It might not bode as well for the others. He was at No. 9 in the Ryder Cup standings.

DeChambeau was ninth on points, one spot ahead of Mickelson, with Kuchar 12th and Stanley 14th.
