SC football coach Will Muschamp defended former assistant D.J. Durkin on Saturday, accusing the media of irresponsibly sharing anonymous accounts of alleged "toxic culture" inside the Maryland football program.

Offensive coordinator Matt Canada is named interim head coach.

Maryland is conducting an external investigation into offensive lineman Jordan McNair's death after a May workout. It's not like ESPN's report was poorly-sourced - it cites "two current Maryland players, multiple people close to the football program, and former players and football staffers".

June 14, 2018: Maryland holds a news conference with acting athletic director Damon Evans and Durkin, along with team physician Dr.

Earlier Saturday, a person who had been briefed on the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that Court had been placed on leave by the school.

The Bleacher Report wrote that McNair appeared in one game last season as a true freshman but ended up redshirting, hoping for a starting spot this year. There's also a Maryland player dead of heat stroke, so Muschamp would probably do well to be a bit less dismissive of such allegations, especially since he chose to address them himself and not as a direct response to a question about them. A final report is expected September 15. McNair's parents hired a Baltimore law firm to also investigate.

Maryland's gubernatorial candidates weighed in on the controversy on Saturday.

"In light of deeply troubling reports about the University of Maryland football program's training practices and general culture, I support the university's decision to suspend Coach DJ Durkin, and expect that the investigation into the program will be wide-ranging and thorough".

"The safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our highest priority", Evans continued.

"If the investigation confirms these reports, then strong and permanent corrective actions should be taken immediately", Hogan said.
