Weekend Forecast Looks Great To View Peak Of Perseid Meteor Shower

Once evening falls Sunday expect to see a meteor or a"shooting star" streaking across the sky every few minutes

If the weather conditions are in our favour and the moon isn't too bright, there's a chance you'll be able to see some spectacular shooting stars in action.

The shower should be visible on both sides of the equator, although it is reportedly a better watch if you're in the mid-northern latitudes, meaning the top spots are European countries, as well as the United States and Canada. With the moons phase nearly at a new moon, that will help you see the meteors even more!

The meteors will appear to originate from the constellation Perseus which will be in the northeast sky. The display of meteors will light up the sky between August 11 and 13.

While the Perseids have been passing over Earth since the end of July, peak viewing will be from August 11 through August 13 as night turns to dawn.

The stars are aligning for anyone interested in watching the Perseid meteor shower this weekend. Nichols describes it as an annual phenomenon when earth runs into the trail of debris left by a comet. But "Earthgrazer" meteors, which skim Earth's atmosphere and showcase long, blazing tails, are visible earlier when the radiant is low above the horizon. In Europe, the eastern European nations may offer some of the clearest skies.

What exactly is a meteor shower?

For the best viewing, move away from city lights and look to the north. However, some forecasters say that Sunday night into Monday will be a bit better. On the flip side, though, the sky will light up for you for 2 nights in a row over the weekend.

According to Space.com, during peak hours people should see about 60-70 meteors per hour.

A number of planets will also be highly visible.

"That's pretty active", he said when asked if that's a lot for a meteor shower. Around 10 p.m., the meteors' visibility should begin to increase.
