Airport Forced to Use Whiteboard to Prevent Total Travel Mayhem

London Gatwick tweet

According to the BBC, Gatwick staff had to bring out whiteboards (like the ones you had in school) to notify passengers of their flight statuses due to all the digital screens in the airport being downed by technical issues.

An airport spokesperson said to the BBC that a "handful of people" ended up missing their flights as a result, and apologized for the inconvenience.

Pictures showed people crowding to see their gate numbers as a member of staff wrote up information on a white board during the busy summer holiday season.

Vodafone provides the service, and said a damaged fibre cable had caused the information boards to stop working.

Edmund von der Burg, a passenger from Stockholm who was at the airport, tweeted that the staff were "all very helpful and dealing with the info screen fault well", but suggested that they share the departure information via Twitter. Please use the temporary flight boards in the departure lounges or listen for airline flight announcements.

The error, which also led to the disappearance of flight information from Gatwick's website, was blamed on the airport's IT provider, Vodafone.

Naturally people have taken to social media to express their grievances, including the "tiny" whiteboard being the only source of information.

All flights are now leaving on time.

"Thank goodness I have eagle-vision and can read messy writing from a distance", she said.
