His turn as the timey-wimey Doctor earned him a BAFTA nomination in the Best Actor category, and his performance as Prince Philip landed him an Emmy nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. While that's likely not how it will work, it looks like former Doctor Who star Matt Smith is ready to make his Star Wars debut.

The former Doctor Who actor has been linked to Star Wars: Episode IX in a "key role", USA entertainment trade magazine Variety has claimed.

J.J. Abrams helmed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and returned to direct this latest installment after Colin Trevorrow left the project following creative differences.

Just a few others to join the cast are Dominic Monaghan, Kerri Russell, and fan favorites Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams.

Smith's role is being kept under wraps, but the actor joins returning cast members Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd.

Stay tuned as we find out more about the new film! Their characters are now unknown. News of his casting comes courtesy of Variety, who also report that he has a "key role" in the film, although of course there's no word yet on exactly who or what that is. Though the actress died in 2016, unused footage from The Force Awakens will be featured in Episode IX in order to complete Leia's story.
