Gareth Southgate: 'I wanted Adam Lallana in Russia'

Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have declared themselves unavailable but Young has no plans to follow them into global retirement.

"Luke has always been a player we have liked", said Southgate.

Express Sport understands that Shaw's form means he will be recalled to the England squad in place of Ashley Young, who went to the World Cup, for upcoming clashes with Spain and Switzerland, when Gareth Southgate names his squad later today.

Overall, the England coach called up 18 of his 23-man 2018 FIFA World Cup squad, with Luke Shaw being called up instead of Ashley Young following his bright start to the new campaign.

Southgate, though, will rightly say he is justified in showing loyalty to players who served him so well as England reached the World Cup semi-final - and time is very much on the side of that gifted young trio.

Martial was linked to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham but Woodward wants to avoid seeing the 22-year-old blossom into a superstar elsewhere despite recent off-field issues, which included the player being fined for returning to training late after leaving United's pre-season tour of the U.S. to attend the birth of his child.

Southgate said he mostly opted for continuity because "those who were with us in the summer deserve the right to go again".

"None of the under-20 team who won the World Cup have established themselves in a first team", said Southgate.

The Three Lions open their UEFA Nations League campaign by taking on Spain at Wembley Stadium connected by EE on Saturday 8 September, before hosting Switzerland in Leicester three days later for a Kick It Out worldwide. "People are going to have to play at a good level to retain their places". I recognise that, when you're travelling with England and not playing for a fair bit of time, that's a different sort of role. "We have some exciting young players we will lose if they are not given that opportunity". I did that myself for a few years.

"If we are encouraging young players about entering academies, we are selling them the dream and there's an ethical element there too".

"They all want to stay available and have all done a fantastic job with us".
