At a Washington Post event a few weeks later, Hassett said it was "probably best" for the president not to tweet before such data is announced.

Asked about the veracity of the statement later that day at a White House press briefing, Hassett said: "So I can tell you what is true". "You'd have to talk to the president about where the number came from, but the correct number is 10 years".

But as of 3.15 pm in NY, shortly after Hassett conceded the error and hours after the claim was challenged in news stories, Trump's false tweet about GDP and unemployment remained online.

"If you look at the collective body of evidence, the notion that what we're seeing right now is just a continuation of trends is not super defensible", Hassett said.

Gasparino's tweet referenced Trump's incorrect assertion that GDP had exceeded the nation's unemployment rate for the first time in 100 years.

"President Trump would need a magic wand to get to 4% GDP", stated President Obama. "And usually the answer is, he doesn't have an answer", Obama continued. "Like, from the initial fact to what the president said, I don't know the whole chain of command", Hassett said. The U.S.is now its 10th year of economic growth, and in its longest period of growth with 95 straight months of job creation. Millions of Americans who can't stand Obama will just tune out the rhetoric, so different than Trump's and so missed by his supporters, but Obama's view of his successor is shared by prominent conservatives such as columnists George Will and Michael Gerson and Sens. "The leadership thought, 'We're going to let this guy play it out".
