MIDTERM MESSAGE: House GOP Seeks to Make Trump Tax Cuts PERMANENT

President Donald Trump has reportedly woken up to the possibility of being ousted from office by angry Democrats, and thinks he can play the situation towards a big reelection in 2020.

A dozen House Republicans opposed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act last December. The provisions include the so-called SALT deduction cap, which is unpopular in high-tax states such as NY and New Jersey.

"This group helps to decide the margin of victory for one party or the other", said Jeff Horwitt, a Democratic pollster who works on Journal/NBC News surveys.

The four House Democrats from CT have a strong shot of returning to the majority in Washington - and perhaps a newcomer might join them - after the midterm elections, a new Quinnipiac University Poll shows.

The new round being proposed by Republicans would add a further $576 billion to the deficit, even taking possibly higher economic growth into account, said the Tax Foundation, a pro-business think tank in Washington.

Under Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress, the federal deficit has begun growing rapidly again and is expected to blow through $1 trillion in 2019.

The poll is another gloomy harbinger for Donald Trump and the GOP, which control the White House and both chambers of Congress. America's growth domestic product grew at a 4.2 percent rate in the second quarter of 2018, on track to grow by 3 percent this calendar year.

Republicans had hoped the legislation would put Democrats, who criticized the legislation for helping the wealthy and corporations more than average families, in a political bind - either vote against tax cuts for individuals or support the GOP-backed law.

Small businesses are benefitting the most. "Republicans gave Congress nearly a full decade to extend these individual tax cuts before they expire", notes The Washington Post's Jeff Stein, "but the law's mediocre polling numbers and the hard election outlook for House Republicans have increased their sense of urgency". Another 28 percent say the economy is "not so good" or "poor". Carter repeated his frustrations with the last Democratic president, Barack Obama, for not engaging more directly with the insular Asian nation. "I opened up our attractive economic engine with Regulation and Tax Cuts. Still plenty to do!"
