Rain delays BMW Championship and possibly Furyk's last Ryder Cup pick

After a week of speculation and Chinese whispers, which was further heightened by the rain delay at the BMW Championship, America captain Jim Furyk opted to select the big-hitting Tony Finau as his fourth pick.

Xander Schauffele, from California, who finished tied for third in the BMW, had also been considered a possible wild card.

Play takes place in Paris, France, on September 28-30.

Finau had been considered a hot favorite based on his strong recent form.

"He has an unbelievable body of work this year", said Furyk, a Ponte Vedra Beach resident. According to the Billy Horschel rule, however, Furyk still has one more pick to make this week.

Finau, is only the third rookie in Jim Furyk's ranks as the USA try to win on foreign soil for the first time in 25 years.

Furyk said Finau "made it impossible not to pick him".

"I'm so excited to be on the Ryder Cup team, and I can not wait to get to Paris", said Finau.

"Hopefully I bring something to the team that can help us bring that Cup back". "Tony played well in big moments this year". Finau is ranked third on the FedEx Cup standings after an incredibly consistent season on the PGA Tour, with three runner-up finishes and 11 top 10 finishes this season.

The eight other players who qualified automatically are US Open and US PGA Championship champion Brooks Koepka, Masters victor Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.

Finau is one of seven players on the US team that is in his 20s.

Team Europe, captained by Thomas Bjorn, contains new world number one Justin Rose, along with Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Alex Noren, Thorbjorn Olesen, Ian Poulter, Jon Rahm and Henrik Stenson.

Finau, who turns 29 on Thursday, was invited by Furyk to play as part of a small group at Le Golf National on the weekend before the British Open. "I can't wait to get to Paris".
