Here’s why the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos wore pajamas to a board meeting

- Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos was in the District Thursday night as he was the featured guest at the Economic Club of Washington D.C.'s Milestone Celebration Dinner at the Washington Hilton. The wealth that Bezos has amassed hasn't come without controversy, as many critics point to poor working conditions at his facilities while others say he doesn't do enough for the public good.

On Thursday, the founder and CEO of Amazon announced the creation of the Bezos Day One Fund, an initiative to create a network of free Montessori-based, preschools in under-resourced neighborhoods and to support groups benefiting homeless families. The new "Bezos Day One Fund" is the result; it'll work to issue "awards" to existing nonprofits that provide shelter and food to homeless young families.

Citing the Amazon mantra of customer obsession, Bezos said in a tweet "the child will be the customer".

Bezos owns the Washington Post, which, along with Amazon have been targets of Trump criticisms. In 2010, Buffett and Gates created the Giving Pledge, which calls on billionaires to pledge the majority of their wealth to charity.

The fight soured many more locals on Amazon and Bezos, and also overshadowed the growing portfolio of philanthropy they had done in the city.

"I'm thinking I want much of my philanthropic activity to be helping people in the here and now-short term-at the intersection of urgent need and lasting impact", he wrote at the time.

The private non-profit foundation in its 2016 tax filing reported almost $46 million U.S. in assets, and giving away $30 million USA in grants support its missions in early education, K-12 schools reform and youth leadership development and scholarships.

"All big institutions of any kind are going to be and should be examined, scrutinized and inspected", he said.

Mr. Trump has described the Washington Post as Amazons chief lobbyist. "The secret sauce of Amazon - the number one thing that has made us successful has by far is obsessive, compulsive focus on the customer". "Jeff Bezos is our enemy, he is our enemy", Sawant said before the council voted. Go Gold boxes by Amazon are special packing boxes adorned with a gold ribbon - the global symbol of childhood cancer.

Avo Makdessian, a vice president at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a non-profit that manages donations for philanthropists including many tech billionaires, said he hoped Bezos' pledge would help inspire other wealthy Americans - as well as the government - to take similar action.
