Losing Speed, Tropical Storm Florence Will Continue Slowly Through The Carolinas

Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane with 120 miles per hour winds on Thursday but dropped to Category 1 before coming ashore.

"I couldn't even imagine", he said.

A woman and her baby were killed when a tree fell on their house and several more storm-related deaths were reported Friday as Hurricane Florence slammed into the Carolinas, dousing the eastern United States with torrential rain.

"A USGS gauge in Emerald Isle, N.C., recently recorded 6.1 feet above normal water levels", the National Hurricane Center said of the storm surge early Friday.

In its latest 1 pm BST update, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said: "Radar data continue to indicate that the maximum sustained winds remain near 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) with higher gusts in heavy rainbands over water". It was downgraded to Category 1 before coming ashore on Friday near Wrightsville Beach close to Wilmington, North Carolina.

Forecasters say "it can not be emphasized enough that the most serious hazard associated with slow-moving Florence is extremely heavy rainfall, which will cause disastrous flooding that will be spreading inland". "I was born and raised here and been through every storm the last 30 years, but this one seems to be doing more damage than we expected".

As Florence first broke on land yesterday 90mph winds struck the coastal areas, but as the storm system moved across land it was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm.

After coming ashore in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, Florence downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday afternoon and trudged into SC later in the night, reports CNN.

South Carolina Department of Transportation head Christy Hall said trees are already down in areas of Horry County and citizens should prepare for flooding.

The city of Jacksonville's statement says people have been moved to the city's public safety center as officials work to find a more permanent shelter.

None of the people rescued were injured.

Utility officials say almost 900,000 homes and businesses were without power in the Carolinas on Friday and more were expected to lose power. City spokeswoman Colleen Roberts tells WRAL-TV that 200 people have already been rescued.

Both the Trent and Neuse rivers overflowed their banks, flooding homes, stores and streets and trapping many people in their houses.

At least 150 people were waiting to be rescued in New Bern, N.C., officials tweeted Thursday evening.

The storm is expected to lumber into far southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC through Saturday, punishing the area with rain and damaging winds. It said there will be "flooding miles and miles inland".

Severe storm surge along the Carolina coastline will continue today and tonight.

The monster storm could dump drenching rains of up to one meter. Hundreds more had to be rescued elsewhere from rising waters. The agency is primarily warning residents about heavy storm surge and heavy rainfall.

As of 2 a.m., Florence was centered about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Satellites will continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Florence from space to make more accurate predictions about where it's heading next.

But forecasters say Florence's biggest threat, as with all hurricanes, lies in its water: a storm surge of up to 11 feet and rainfall that will trigger catastrophic flooding.
