Mike Pompeo accuses John Kerry of 'actively undermining U.S. policy' on Iran

Kerry Admits Meeting With Zarif Several Times, Says Did Not 'Coach' Him

The reporter also wanted to know whether Pompeo thought Kerry and other former officials were interfering or undermining the Trump administration's efforts to gain cooperation from European leaders regarding new US policies on Iran.

Pompeo said that while he'll leave judgments of the legality of Kerry's conduct to others, "what Secretary Kerry has done is unseemly and unprecedented".

During interviews this week Mr Kerry has accused the Trump administration of pursuing a policy of regime change in Iran.

"You can't find precedent for this in USA history and the secretary ought not engage in this kind of behavior", Pompeo continued, in answer to a question.

He added, "Actively undermining U.S. policy, as a former secretary of state, is literally unheard of".

Kerry defended his actions out of office, saying "everybody does it", citing Henry Kissinger as an example and adding that there's "nothing unusual about it".

Kerry told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt this week that he had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif "three or four" times since leaving office to discuss the Iran nuclear deal and other issues.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) is a disclosure statement that requires a person acting as an agent of a foreign principal in a political or quasi-political capacity to make public disclosure of their relationship with the foreign principal.

Even under Trump, Kerry won't be prosecuted for violating the Logan Act, a dead-letter law that bars private diplomacy against United States interests.

In his tweet, Trump asked whether Kerry had complied with the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Pompeo, the current secretary of state, followed up on Trump's criticism at a briefing, calling the meetings "unseemly", "unprecedented" and "beyond inappropriate".

Kerry, the former MA senator who worked as the nation's top diplomat in the Obama administration, made the comments about his interactions with Iran as he promotes his new book, "Every Day Is Extra".

Trump withdrew the United States from a nuclear deal that Kerry clinched in 2015 between Iran and six world powers.

"I'm confident that they met with their troika counterparts", Pompeo continued. I've also seen reports that he is apparently providing, according to reports, advice to the Iranian government.

Meetings between a private USA citizen and foreign official are not against the law and not necessarily inappropriate or a violation of federal regulations, but Trump, Pompeo and several GOP lawmakers say they are evidence Kerry and former Obama administration officials are trying to subvert Trump's hard line on Iran.

"The devil's always in the details", Rosenstein said.

A day later he added: "John Kerry can't get over the fact that he had his chance and blew it! Stay away from negotiations John, you are hurting your country!" he said on May 8.

Trump took it one step further. A third is reported to have occurred at the United Nations headquarters, which is not technically on USA soil.

The latter assertion was a reference to a question Kerry fielded in his Fox News appearance about whether he has told Iranians to "wait out" Trump until there is a new president.

"That's not my job, and my coaching him would not, you know, that's not how it works", he said in the interview.
