Browns to release WR Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon Released by Cleveland Browns

Despite Gordon's breathtaking amount of red flags and off-field issues, there should be plenty of receiver-needy teams eager take him up on his postscript offer.

Gordon has been suspended several times during his career for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Josh Gordon's very odd 6 years with the Cleveland Browns have gone up in smoke. the team just chose to release him.

Browns general manager John Dorsey said in a statement that the team has informed Gordon's representatives that he will be released Monday.

Josh Gordon's latest comeback attempt has ended.

It's interesting - Gordon missed the start of Browns camp as he continued to receive treatment for issues that kept him out of the National Football League entirely in 2015 and 2016, but he returned before preseason ended and was expected to be one of their top receivers.

The team had stuck with Gordon, 27, through all his personal troubles over a period of six years but will part ways with him on Monday officially.

Earlier Saturday, the Browns had downgraded Gordon from questionable to out for the Saints game, with a hamstring injury. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Browns are "far more likely" to trade Gordon rather than release him. After a superb 2013 season in which Gordon caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games, the talented pass-catcher couldn't stay on the field. In 2014, Gordon was suspended for the whole year, but it was later reduced to 10 games.

Although Gordon has been with the Browns since 2012, he's only played in 41 games over seven seasons, totaling 180 receptions, 3,106 yards, and 16 touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon looks on at a drill during the final day of training camp in Berea Tuesday.

Many are wondering where Gordon will end up.
