Police investigating after needles found in Australian strawberries

'If in doubt, throw them out': Needles in strawberries prompt warning

The Queensland Government is offering a $100,000 reward for information which leads to the arrest of whoever is putting needles inside supermarket strawberries.

Van Dorp says he bit into one and swallowed half of a sewing needle, before the pair found another.

Donnybrook supplies Coles and Woolworths stores across Australia.

Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said that following today's potential "copycat" incident, people should be "ultra cautious" and cut up any strawberries before consuming them.

Police believe the needles may have been deliberately planted with the perpetrator wanting to cause harm.

Investigators are looking at "all options and avenues of the packaging and processing of the strawberries", Queensland Police Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Terry Lawrence told 9NEWS.

"We are now working with retailers nationwide to ensure that all Donnybrook stock is removed from sale", Dr Young said.

The disturbing discovery was made by a Coles employee who saw the unsafe object inside a punnet of strawberries at a shop in Gatton, west of Brisbane yesterday.

"It wasn't five minutes later they rang back and said it was too late, he'd actually bitten into it".

Queensland Strawberry Growers Association issued a statement saying they "have reason to suspect that a disgruntled ex-employee may have orchestrated the occurrence", but Det.

Four cases of sewing needles have been discovered in strawberries since Sunday.

Neither Queensland police or Queensland Health confirmed Ms Faugeras' claims in their press conference on Thursday afternoon.

"Just posting this as a warning to anyone that has bought strawberries (Berry Obsessions) from Woolworths recently", Gane wrote on September 9.

The complaint spurred an investigation from Queensland authorities, after it was revealed the two contaminated brands were sold in stores in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT.

The Queensland Strawberry Growers Association says a disgruntled farm worker may be responsible, as the two brands affected, Berry Obsession and Berrylicious, came from the same farm.

"We're keeping a very open mind as to where this may have occurred somewhere between the actual growing of the strawberry through to the end of the production line, including even further through to distribution and going onto the shelves", he said. If you are in doubt of the brand, throw them out.

Meanwhile, a NSW mother revealed her ten-year-old child discovered sabotaged fruit in a case yet unconfirmed by police.

The incident follows an earlier plea from strawberry farmers for consumers to buy more strawberries as the market suffered a glut of the fresh fruit, dropping prices to A$1 (NZ$1.50) or less.

"They went through the green top and half way thru strawberry so if you ate whole would not know", she said.

"We have withdrawn Berry Obsession and Berry Licious branded strawberries from sale while this incident is being investigated with our suppliers".

On Thursday, police said they feared there may be copycat culprits as a needle was found in another batch of strawberries.
