Trump Calls Research Behind Hurricane Maria Deaths 'Magic' in Fresh Attack

Massive stockpile of bottled water found in Puerto Rico a year after Maria

He's talking about the one a year ago because he's been tweeting a lot about how good a job he did responding to Hurricane Maria that decimated Puerto Rico last year, resulting in the death of nearly 3,000 American citizens.

This new study of Maria, as indicated above, was looking at the number of people who probably would have died on average in each month following the storm going out to February fo the following year.

The tweets came after Trump on Wednesday, as Hurricane Florence approached the Southeast US coast, attacked criticism lobbed in recent months over the federal government's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, calling his administration's efforts "underappreciated". Researchers used what they called a "state-of-the-art mathematical model", which Trump misrepresented - wrongly saying the study counted deaths "for any reason, like old age". On Thursday he claimed that the death toll in Puerto Rico was a Democratic ploy to "make me look as bad as possible".

Gov. Rick Scott, who is running for the U.S. Senate, tweeted: "I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand".

President Trump posted several tweets Thursday morning questioning the death tolls reported out of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Trump continued to enrage his critics in a series of tweets on Friday night, casting doubt on an academic study that calculated almost 3,000 deaths in the months following Maria.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who is now running for the US Senate, tweeted: "I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand".

Largely due to decades of neglect and years of fiscal crisis, the Puerto Rican electrical grid collapsed into the United States' longest-ever blackout after Maria hit on September 20, 2017.

"I'm not to blame for this", Trump said about Maria at one point, according to one of his advisers.

Carlson accused Avenatti of using "reckless rhetoric on a subject you don't really understand", to which Avenatti responded, "I stand by my words, and I think for you to lecture me about reckless rhetoric is rather ironic, Tucker, in light of some of the reckless rhetoric you engage in each and every day on this show".

A George Washington University study in July found that 2975 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria, which struck the island territory in September 2017. "My only consideration was the well-being of the Puerto Rican people".

Santos-Vasquez said the president's numbers are wrong.

But Trump suggested Friday that it was questionable that the Puerto Rican government commissioned the study from an outside group.

Pelosi led a congressional delegation trip to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in late July to assess the ongoing recovery needs. He's the president of the United States. He says, "This method was never done with previous hurricanes because other jurisdictions know how many people were killed".

George Washington University said in a statement that it stands by its study.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello also has criticized Trump for not providing additional federal funds still needed for emergency housing and debris removal.
