Time running out for Kavanaugh accuser to talk, say Republicans

Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused President Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, is willing to testify about her allegations but wants an imminent hearing to be pushed back, her attorney said Thursday. Over the weekend, Ford told the left-wing Washington Post she "told no one at the time what happened to her".

A group of roughly 100 people marched to the office of Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Thursday for a sit-in, some with fists raised. He also rejected Democrats' request for an FBI investigation.

From left, Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, Alexis Goldstein and Sarah Burgess, alumnae of the Holton-Arms School, and Sen. "We are standing with her regardless of what our political background is because we see this as a nonpartisan issue", said Ford's classmate Samantha Semerad Guerry, who signed the letter, CNN reported.

In a separate tweet Wednesday, Grassley wondered why Democrats are calling for an FBI investigation now instead of when they first received Ford's letter containing the allegation.

"Even what she's done so far would impact my thinking, but not almost as much as if she sat there and I had a chance to question her", Bredesen said.

Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa says an FBI investigation isn't needed.

Ford lawyer Lisa Banks said in a statement late Wednesday that Ford would cooperate with a thorough, nonpartisan probe. She accused Kavanaugh of attacking her and trying to remove her clothing while he was drunk at a party when he was 17 years old and she was 15.

More than 50 protesters opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court have been arrested on Capitol Hill.

But Grassley told a radio interviewer on Tuesday that Ford's lack of response so far "kind of raises the question, do they want to come to the public hearing or not".

He added that Kavanaugh was "anxious" to answer the accusations against him, while acknowledging that the testimony would hold up his confirmation.

This is important because Kavanaugh and Ford are expected to appear at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Monday to testify.

"We just don't know what happened 36 years ago and there are gaps in her memory".

Chuck Grassley (R-IA) offering Kavanaugh accuser Christine Ford an opportunity to appear before the panel on Monday, Christian Right leaders fear her testimony could blow up the Kavanaugh nominations, delaying another candida until after the midterm election where the GOP faces the very real possibility of losing both chambers of Congress.

Judge already said Friday that the allegation was "absolutely nuts" and that he "never saw Brett act that way".

"If she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting, and we'll have to make a decision", he said.

Ford wants an FBI investigation before testifying.

"The White House is walking a tightrope", said evangelist Robert Jeffress, a close confidante of Trump.

He said he has scheduled the hearing on coming Monday. McConnell expressed confidence that Kavanaugh would be confirmed: "I'm not concerned about tanking the nomination".

Professor Blasey Ford says Mr Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed and tried taking off her clothes during the high school party.

Thomas and Kavanaugh have denied the accusations against them.

Clinton says that makes it hard to "avoid the appearance of insult" against Ford.
