Deadline Passes, Senate Awaits Word On Christine Blasey Ford Testimony

Kavanaugh Accuser Rejects 'Arbitrary' Ultimatum Regarding Testimony, Gets More Time

Lawyers for Ford have said she wants to testify before a Senate panel next week, but only if her safety is guaranteed.

California professor Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of groping her and attempting to cover her mouth to muffle her screams at a high school party in the 1980s, and her attorneys are in negotiations with the Senate Judiciary Committee to set the terms for her testimony.

The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh has been held up while the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford are assessed. Now the party holds a slim 51 vote majority, raising the stakes for confirming Kavanaugh. First, studies have shown that a minority of sexual assault survivors report their assault to authorities.

"I'm providing notice of a vote to occur Monday in the event that Dr. Ford's attorneys don't respond or Dr. Ford decides not to testify", Grassley said in the statement earlier Friday. Thus it is not necessary for Ford to drive across the country to be heard by the committee, which raises questions about why she is requesting to delay the committee hearing. "They are totally intent on getting Judge Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court come hell or high water".

Ford's lawyers said on Tuesday she would testify before the committee only if the FBI first investigated her allegation. "Who is not asking the FBI to investigate these claims?"

More recently, he continued to endorse Alabama's Republican candidate for Senate, Roy Moore, as accusations of sexual assault mounted. Both Kavanaugh and Ford have said they will testify in front of Congress, but Ford's lawyers are still negotiating the terms of her appearance.

In addition to security, expected to be provided by Capitol Police, Ford has asked for press coverage of her testimony to be the same as for Kavanaugh.

"Dr Ford was reluctantly thrust into the public spotlight only two days ago", Ms Banks said in a statement.

"We already had a hearing", Cornyn said. "I mean, you could also say, when did this all happen?"

"Let it play out", Trump said.

Her lawyers say the professor's life has been turned upside down, having received death threats and been forced out of her home. Grassley said he was disturbed to learn of the threats. Democrats have demanded more time for scrutiny and Republicans want to move ahead quickly with a confirmation vote in an increasingly volatile political climate ahead of the November 6 congressional elections.

The senior Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, called Trump's logic "a highly offensive misunderstanding of surviving trauma".

Republican panel member Lindsey Graham said on Twitter that requiring an FBI investigation of a 36-year-old allegation "is not about finding the truth, but delaying the process till after the midterm elections".

"I knew them both, and socialized with" the other classmate, Ford said, adding that she had once visited him in the hospital.

Fellow Republican Susan Collins of ME said she hoped Prof Ford would "reconsider and testify" on Monday.

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that Kavanaugh's nomination faces growing opposition from voters, with 38% in opposition, compared to 29% in the same poll last month.

"If she doesn't want to participate and tell her story, there's no reason for us to delay", Sen.

Ford wished to remain anonymous, but made a decision to speak to the Post amid fears she was on the verge of being outed. "Look how angry the left is", he said.
