American Bar Association calls for renewed Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Kavanaugh

Senate Judiciary Committee Recommends Brett Kavanaugh for Confirmation, but Jeff Flake Calls for One-Week Delay

Senate Judiciary Committee Recommends Brett Kavanaugh for Confirmation, but Jeff Flake Calls for One-Week Delay

Jeff Flake of Arizona says it's a "tough call" on whether to support Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court after his dramatic testimony on a sexual assault accusation.

Mr Kavanaugh angrily denied the allegations that he assaulted Ms Ford while they were both in high school, while she said she was "100 per cent" certain he was her attacker. Kavanaugh later offered a vociferous and emotional defense, alternately shouting and tearing up on national television.

Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona, did propose a delay of up to a week to allow the FBI to investigate allegations against Kavanaugh before the full Senate votes on the nomination.

When Republicans and Kavanaugh called an FBI investigation an attempt by Democrats to slow things down, Whitehouse threw up the July 1 theory as one example of something that needs more investigation.

The vote will be the first one in a series to determine whether conservatives lock in a favorable court for a generation with a 5-4 majority. Kavanaugh, testifying second, forcefully denied the accusation. "That what happened to me doesn't matter".

The Republican is among a handful of undecided senators on Kavanaugh.

"There's been a great deal of public discussion about the #MeToo movement today versus the Year of the Woman nearly 27 years ago", she said at Thursday's hearing.

"I'm sorry I did that - this is a tough process, I'm sorry about that", the judge said.

A quarter-century ago, a national controversy over a Supreme Court nominee's alleged sexual misconduct triggered the wave that swept Dianne Feinstein and three other women into the Senate.

The White House requested that the FBI proceed with the investigation soon after.

Democrats have been calling for such an investigation, though Republicans and the White House have insisted it's unnecessary.

Following Flake's announcement, Senate Republican leadership agreed to a one-week delay for a background check on Kavanaugh.

Separately, former Kavanaugh classmate Mark Judge - who Ford says witnessed and encouraged the attack - told the committee in a letter he will cooperate with any law enforcement agency that investigates "confidentially".

Flake - who forced the committee to agree to the investigation after telling Republican colleagues that it is the only way he will vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation - suggested to NPR on Friday that the decision of which allegations to investigate will be left to the FBI. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) has already become an iconic moment in the debate over Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would consolidate conservative control of the nation's highest court and advance Trump's broad effort to shift the American judiciary to the right.

"I hoped we would do better and show women that our country, our committee, has in fact changed", she said in the Judiciary Committee.

The decision to schedule the afternoon vote passed 11-8 with all Republican members of the committee in favor and Democratic Sen. "Then, only at an 11th hour, on the eve of Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation vote, did the ranking member refer the allegations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation". So far, the witnesses named by the accusers have said they don't remember the incidents taking place.
