The hearing will be the first time the world sees and hears from Ms Ford beyond the grainy photo that has appeared in the media in the 10 days since she came forward with her claims.

That became clear this week as Kavanaugh, now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, sat for a Fox News interview - the first time a Supreme Court nominee has done so - in which he said, "The truth is I've never sexually assaulted anyone, in high school or otherwise".

The nominee has vehemently denied all of the allegations ahead of the Senate Judiciary Committee that was to take place on Thursday where one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, was to also testify to senators.

Trump said that if lawmakers had moved faster, "you wouldn't be talking about it right now, which is frankly what I would have preferred". The release includes a day-by-day view of the committee's investigative work over the last two weeks since allegations surfaced targeting Kavanaugh. In a sworn statement, she said she witnessed Kavanaugh "consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s".

His remarks came in a press conference that started with him stating all the accusations against Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh are lies, and later calling developments late in the confirmation process a "con job", adding that "I've used much worse language in my life than con job".

"I can always be convinced", Trump said. Sometimes I had too many.

"Upon receiving the anonymous letter we immediately notified the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is handling the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh".

"You may defeat me in the final vote, but you'll never get me to quit, never".

Mr Kavanaugh has said he "categorically and unequivocally" denies the allegation.

"I look forward to what she has to say", Trump said.

Who says politicians think only about the next election?

Trump did not specify which of the 22 women who have accused him of sexual misconduct were paid for their allegations. Ford has claimed that Kavanaugh tried to remove her clothes and clamped a hand over her mouth at a party when both were in high school.

Blasey Ford's accusations have thrust her into an intense national spotlight, as Trump seeks to push through his nominee on party lines and Democrats demand a suspension of the proceedings to allow the FBI to conduct a thorough investigation. Ford considered the incident to be "attempted rape", her lawyer said.

The sender of the complaint described an evening apparently involving Kavanaugh, her own daughter and several friends in 1998.

"I am definitely anxious about her...."

Kavanaugh has also been accused of exposing himself to a classmate, Deborah Ramirez, during an alcohol-fueled Yale University party a few years later.
