"It is right at the top".

One of Europe's studs, Rory McIlroy has limped his way around the course in the early going, unable to get anything going with any club. Not changing - and you suspect it might not change for years to come - is the new dream team of Tommy Fleetwod and Francesco Molinari who were nothing short of magnificent yesterday in taking down Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed in the morning before seeing off Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the afternoon. Woods and Reed were the only losers for the U.S.

Any match he's playing in Saturday afternoon takes away an opportunity from a sharper, younger player.

Phil Mickelson missed his first opening session since his rookie year in the Ryder Cup, and he was missing while in action during the afternoon.

Thousands of fans, some of whom managed to get a seat for the opening tee shot in the grandstand that holds just under 7,000 surrounding the first tee, left Le Golf National chanting, cheering and singing over this wild turn of events. McIlroy himself will join Sergio Garcia who hit back at any doubters yesterday as he and Alex Noren completely dismantled the U.S. pair of Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau.

The experienced duo of Poulter and four-time major victor Rory McIlroy battled back from 2-down to beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 4 and 2.

Finau and Koepka secured a point for the United States after Rose and Rahm faltered on the 18th hole after having led for most of their four-ball match.

With that in mind, let's take a look at how this is all going to play out over three days in Paris with a gander at the rules, format and schedule for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson resumed their highly successful partnership to hammer Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler 3 and 2 having been 5-up after 11.

Finau chipped in for an eagle on the par-4 No. 6 to tie the match, but the Europeans were 2 up through 12.

"There is nothing like it", said Fleetwood after his first Ryder Cup match.

"I didn't actually see her at first", he added.

In fairness to Mickelson and DeChambeau, Garcia and Noren played suffocating, sensational golf at times, making five birdies en route to building their big lead. Koepka acknowledged his teammate's good fortune on No. 16, "but to come out in his first Ryder Cup and play the way he did, I'm proud of him and glad to have him as my teammate".

"I think Alex was a rock", said the Spaniard.

Player's verdictTony Finau "I said, 'get lucky [on the 16th]', and fortunately I did".

Spieth and Thomas were magnificent in their thrilling 1-up fourballs win over Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton, but off-colour against the excellent Molinari and Fleetwood.

And they were pitted against each other again in a Saturday morning rematch of Friday's fourball.
