The BSR Surf Resort voluntarily closed down its wave pool after a surfer infected with Naegleria fowleri died since visiting the park. CDC is working to determine the source of the amoeba

A 29-year-old Atlantic County surfer has died from a so-called "brain-eating amoeba".

Stabile, whose family said he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to surf, had been at the park on vacation.

Stabile complained of a headache on September 16, and the following day he was found to be incoherent and unable to get out of bed.

KTBS reported that tests by the Louisiana Department and of Health and Hospitals at the Sligo Water System were positive for Naegleria fowleri.

The BSR Surf Resort in Waco voluntarily closed its wave pool for CDC testing after a surfer who visited the pool died from Naegleria fowleri, which is also known as a "brain-eating amoeba". Officials are investigating the source.

Naegleria fowleri can not be contracted by swallowing contaminated water, according to the CDC. The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals. The disease causes "primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which destroys brain tissue and causes swelling and death", according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

CDC spokesperson Candice Burns Hoffmann said that preliminary test results should be ready next week and will provide recommendations to BSR Surf Resort for reducing potential exposures in the future, as reported by the Waco Tribune-Herald.

The Baylor Wakeboarding club team is scheduled to host a tournament next weekend at the surf resort.

BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E Parsons Jr. said: 'Our hearts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the New Jersey surf community during this hard time.

The infection has a 97 percent fatality rate, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
