Woods and Mickelson have indifferent Ryder Cup records - Woods has won 14.5 points out of a possible 33, and Mickelson 18.5 from 42. Just don't expect there to be a barrage of birdies at Le Golf National this week.

Mickelson notably revealed the lack of input by players into captain Tom Watson's decisions in a 2014 loss at Gleneagles, then became closer to Woods when they combined in a U.S. attempt to improve Ryder Cup results in the wake of the flop in Scotland. To see him get back there after quite a while off I think is very impressive, and I'm glad to see it. A total of 7-under 277 won it for Sweden's Alex Noren in July, the lowest winning score to par on tour this season.

At some point this week, Bubba Watson will hit an opening tee shot that will be different from recent Ryder Cups.

But 10th-ranked Spieth, also the 2015 Masters and US Open victor, could lift his spirits by helping the US team keep the Ryder Cup when the biennial battle with Europe is renewed Friday at France's Le Golf National.

"That's kind of been the trend the last few Ryder Cups or the ones I've played on".

"Just being dumb with the team", he said.

"Tee balls are key here", Spieth said.

Tiger just met another Tiger. He's been terrible all season, but he's arguably the greatest Ryder Cup golfer of all time. As Woods shook the hands of the youngsters standing in a line, he reached a British player named Robin Williams, whose middle name is Tiger.

"I've been excited for this for basically since the last day in Hazeltine when we weren't the ones spraying champagne for a change", the 29-year-old said.

"There's going to be so many people that are sitting in there, it's going to be an unbelievable atmosphere, " Reed said.

Flags were raised, anthems were played and the partisan cheers began late Thursday afternoon to signal the end of a hype and anticipation of a Ryder Cup featuring two of the strongest teams the US and Europe have presented at the same time. US captain Jim Furyk said Wednesday it's "probably not too likely".

That was a reference to Sutton being the captain in 2004 when he sent out Woods and Mickelson twice, both losses.

"I guess nothing's out of the realm".

The USA have given first caps to 37 players in that same timeframe, also playing 131 matches between them and earning 65 points. I think it would mean a lot to our team and to the United States.

"We try to breed that and we try to breed the team getting together and everyone taking care of each other, but really it's one of my easiest jobs because it's such an easy group".

Asked if the pairing might happen, Mickelson said: "I do have an idea of what captain Furyk is thinking, yeah".

Jon Rahm was willing to show some deference as one of five European rookies at the Ryder Cup. When they finished, Rahm was on the massage table and had fallen asleep because of jet lag. "It was sort of a bit of a "throw us together at the last moment and see how it goes". You know, I'm not going to give away who we are going to be playing with or our pairings or anything.

"Obviously you have to protect yourself and respond to something like that and say whatever comes to mind". Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed are in the anchor match.

McIlroy was in the final group with Woods on Sunday as the 14-time major victor won his first title since 2013 and 80th on the PGA Tour in the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
