Personal information of users "was exposed due to a flaw in Facebook's code that allowed hackers and other nefarious users to take over user accounts and siphon off Personal Information for unsavory and illegal purposes", according to the complaint, which was filed by a California woman and a Virginia man.

Even as Facebook struggles to deal with a fresh data breach that affected almost 50 million of its users, Google's video streaming platform YouTube continues to host tutorials that claim to provide people ways to hijack Facebook accounts, the media reported. Facebook is also taking the precautionary step of resetting access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the a year ago. Presumably the social media giant will begin releasing more information about the breach soon, but the radio silence throughout the weekend indicates that it is either still in the process of gathering that data or is deciding how to disclose it.

The incident is believed to be the largest in Facebook's history.

Around 300,000 people download the app, authorising access to information on their profile and also to the data of their Facebook friends.

The Facebook- Cambridge Analytica scandal opened the can of worms and now the new breach is raising several new questions on the way Facebook functions.

In 2016 CA is hired by Donald Trump's U.S. presidential campaign. Facebook has not offered details on what kind of data could have been compromised from third party apps.

Cambridge Analytica, which denies the accusations, has since filed for voluntary bankruptcy in the United States and Britain.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Ireland's Data Protection Commission, the leading entity that looks over Facebook for the European Union, has asked for more information pertaining to the hack.

This is also the first time Facebook admitted to an unauthorised breach by unknown attackers.

As a result, the Facebook said that around 90 million people will now have to log back in to Facebook, or any of their apps that use Facebook Login. You can also try deactivating your account for some time, as reactivating it will also grant new access tokens, while old tokens will automatically expire.

The sites have acknowledged finding on their platforms messages, accounts and pages associated with the Internet Research Agency, a Saint Petersburg operation that is alleged to be a "troll farm" connected to the Russian government. That political consulting firm told Facebook it had deleted the information, but it hadn't.

"We've identified and removed fake accounts ahead of elections in France, Germany, Alabama, Mexico and Brazil", Zuckerberg said. Facebook has now fixed the vulnerability and launched an investigation.
