Francesco Molinari: 'It doesn't mean anything if you don't win the Cup'

Phil Mickelson told to 'RETIRE' from golf after Ryder Cup horror show

Francesco Molinari walked straight into the heart of a throng of rowdy European fans beside the 16th tee and was soon covered with beer from plastic pint pots. "Early wins tomorrow will go a long way".

For Woods and Mickelson, it was a lost week in France.

Not for nothing is Ian Poulter nicknamed "The Postman" whenever the Ryder Cup is involved. The former UCLA player went through Q-school as a reinstated amateur and turned professional again at the start of the season.

But this was more about the Europeans as a team, and they were tougher than ever on a course they know well.

The Ryder Cup is finishing up on NBC.

That victory, two years after the US won on home soil, sparked wild celebrations and means the British Open victor is the first European player ever to score a maximum five points in the Ryder Cup and only the second overall since Europe combined to take on the Americans. It didn't help that his partners, Reed and DeChambeau, contributed little. Still, Rahm seemed in disbelief after Sunday possibly because of whom he had beaten.

"I'll definitely go through some things in my head and work with the PGA of America and our Ryder Cup committee, and we'll move forward".

"That's the goal. We want to be successful in this event".

"For me personally, I went 0-4".

"Very disappointing", Woods said.

"They had a six-point lead, and now it's four", Spieth said. "It's been a rough year", the 38-year-old said.

Europe were up 10-4 until Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson won their match on the 16th, and Spieth and Thomas closed out their match right behind them. Other than a brief rally in the middle of his match against Molinari, there was never much doubt about the outcome. I don't think I can quantify how much it means.

Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari remained on course to create history and inflict yet another defeat on Tiger Woods as Europe looked to maintain their healthy lead in the 42nd Ryder Cup. "It was some phenomenal golf, and they flat-out beat us". The Europeans were treated like rock stars before more than 50,000 fans. "To win this thing back is even more special". He's probably closer to the end than Woods but certainly not washed up by any stretch. But the most impressive performance was by Ryder Cup rookie Thorbjorn Olesen.

As Europe romped to a seven-point victory, Woods' career record dipped to 13-21-3. Several other players came over and played it prior to the Open Championship, but the US team didn't have near the knowledge of the course that their opponents did.

The victor of The Open Championship in July, Molinari formed a dream partnership with Tommy Fleetwood this week, the duo's ideal record in fourball and foursomes matches a key factor in ensuring the U.S. remain without a win on European soil since 1993. We all get along so well. This time, there were no complaints.

Justin Thomas, who was the best player for the USA, tied for eighth at the French Open this summer.

"Some of you might question some of the decisions, but everything was done with reason, input, thought through, and then it's up to us to execute". We just have to tip our caps.

Mickelson isn't ready to walk away from the Ryder Cup. "This could very well, realistically, be my last one".

He added: "I love these 12 guys".

"It's hard not to get emotional when you think about the other players, the vice captains, Thomas [Bjorn, the captain], the wives".

A US comeback would have tied the biggest in Ryder Cup play, equaling the four-point American rally in 1999, and would have been the first by the Americans on European soil since 1993. He's surely got his sights on 2020. "Never felt like I had a rookie playing alongside me", Molinari said. Woods hadn't made the team when Mickelson won it in 1995. The only thing left for the US team to do is to wait until 2020, when the Cup comes to Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin and hope home turf serve them well.

While the European players celebrated outside the clubhouse Sunday evening, a private jet roared overhead.

And take Lefty with him.
