Senate Judiciary Committee votes on recommending Brett Kavanaugh for confirmation

ABA asks US Senate committee to halt Kavanaugh vote till FBI probe

I am called "evil" by a Democratic member of this committee... He tweeted Thursday that Kavanaugh "showed America exactly why I nominated him".

The White House confirmed that Trump watched the testimony aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from NY.

He added: "Democrats' search and destroy strategy is disgraceful and this process has been a total sham and effort to delay, obstruct, and resist".

Flake then returned and announced he would vote to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate with the understanding that his request would be honored.

"The basic principles that underscore the Senate's constitutional duty of advice and consent on federal judicial nominees require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI", said Robert Carlson, president of the organization, in a Thursday night letter addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

Mitchell's attempt to draw out a counter-narrative - mainly that Ford was coordinating with Democrats - was disrupted by the panel's decision to allow alternating five-minute rounds of questions from Democratic senators.

Kavanaugh has categorically denied all of the allegations against him and is also scheduled to testify on Thursday to rebut Ford and the other women who have since come forward.

Kavanaugh is accused of sexually assaulting Dr. Christine Ford when they were teenagers in the 1980s, but whether he gets a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court will come down to the support of a handful of Republican senators. "I am innocent of this charge". (Ford had previously told her therapist in 2012 there were four boys in the room during her alleged assault, and later said her therapist had inaccurately recorded her statements).

"I want to hear the whole testimony before I say anything", he said.

The married mother-of-two, wearing glasses and a sober dark blue suit, appeared nervous but poised as she sat at the witness table, consulting occasionally with her lawyer.

Shaking his head, Kavanaugh spoke into the mic and said "no".

"That's not the type of behavior that anybody at any age should do", she said.

She said she feared the personal consequences would be akin to "jumping in front of a train".

"I tried to yell for help", she said. When I did, Brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling.

Blasey Ford said she managed to escape after Judge jumped on the bed, sending the three toppling to the floor.

In his first remarks about Ford's testimony, Trump said Friday the California psychology professor was "very compelling" and looked like "a very fine woman to me", calling her "a credible witness".

It has become less clear that Republican leaders will be able to hold Republican senators behind President Donald Trump's nominee. "This is a circus".

"The accusations brought against Judge Kavanaugh are sickening and deserve an independent investigation", Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker tweeted. "Investigate", he said. "And make sure you're doing it for the right reasons".

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh pauses as he testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018 on Capitol Hill in Washington. "And it would be hard to justify - these allegations are coming up about him, but not other people - how do they justify putting him in such an important role?"

Her account, delivered in a soft and sometimes-halting voice, came as the Judiciary panel began an extraordinary session that Republicans hope will let them salvage Kavanaugh's chances of joining the high court.

The emotional tone continued as Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Mr Kavanaugh's strongest backers, lashed out at Democrats. "And I believe many Americans across the country believe you".

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Friday that Kavanaugh has already "been through six separate background investigations by the FBI".
