'Very strong' typhoon Trami churns towards Japan - The Jakarta Post

Evacuation orders were issued for hundreds of thousands of people over a widespread area, including more than 250,000 people in the city of Tokushima on the island of Shikoku, the national broadcaster NHK reported. Trami is the latest in a series of extreme natural events in Japan, which has suffered typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and heat waves in recent months, claiming scores of lives and causing extensive damage.

Trami, lost some strength after making landfall near Tanabe City, 450 kilometres south-west of Tokyo, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to downgrade it to a "strong" typhoon from an "extremely strong" one.

In its projected course are regions hit earlier this month by Typhoon Jebi, which caused landslides, floods and shuttered a major airport.

East Japan Railway said it would halt all train services in the Tokyo metropolitan area from 8 p.m. on Sunday and operations of some bullet trains were also suspended.

More than 185,000 homes and offices had power outages as of 9 p.m. on Sunday in the southern Kyushu region, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co., while about 118,000 buildings were without power in Okinawa as of 9:50 p.m. according to Okinawa Electric Power Co.

Deadly record rainfall hit western Japan earlier this year and the country sweltered through one of the hottest summers on record.

Storm surges are forecast to hit coastal areas along the typhoon's route, including the bays of Osaka, Ise and Mikawa in western and central Japan.

Hokkaido is reeling from a magnitude-6.7 quake in early September that killed more than 40 people.
