Wang Earns Happy, Historic Wuhan Win

Barty downs Wimbledon champ Kerber

This win was Barty's first over a top-10 player since last year's Wuhan tournament, when she defeated the world's No.7, No.4 and No.10 players on her way to the final.

Wang Qiang became the first Chinese tennis player in history to progress to the semifinals of the Wuhan Open, after winning her quarterfinal against Puerto Rico's Monica Puig here on Thursday.

Sabalenka, who earned her maiden WTA title at this summer's Connecticut Open, faces Estonia's Anett Kontaveit in the final.

Up next for Cibulkova is Russia's Daria Kasatkina who saved four match-points before overcoming China's 17-year-old Wang Xiyu 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8).

She's risen from No.73 in the world to No.20 this year.

The second was not even much of a contest, with Barty firing two aces during the 30-minute affair and converting both of her break points to run up a comfortable lead that Kerber was unable to assail.

Puig managed to level the first set 6-all and force a tie break that looked as if it might have gone either way.

"I've really been waiting for our next one. She's definitely going to be a tough test for me, especially her playing at home, she's going to have the home court advantage", she said. "She's an absolute quality player".

The 34th-ranked Wang won the first two games of the match to the delight of the home fans, but the clinical Kontaveit won the next six in a row to take the first set.

Her exit means the first final of 2018 for the 22-year-old Kontaveit, who will be looking to win her second WTA title.

Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva, once ranked second in the world, lost to Hungarian qualifier Fanny Stollar 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Wang, who recently became China's No. 1, promised there was more to come from her country's women, who bear the burden of following Li, Asia's first Grand Slam victor and a trailblazer for tennis in the world's most populous nation.
