Tipsy birds flying into windows, cars in northern Minnesota

Birds in Gilbert Minn. have been overindulging on berries that have fermented earlier than expected because of an unexpected frost

On social media, Gilbert residents noted seeing birds "walking on a sidewalk", while others reported hitting several with their vehicles.

Police say the reason behind this is the fact that certain berries in the area have fermented earlier than usual due to an early frost.

Residents of Gilbert, Minnesota, have been reporting birds flying into windows and cars and acting generally confused.

Many birds have not yet migrated south, and those still in town have been eating the berries up and, according to police, getting "a little more "tipsy" than normal'". One woman recalled having to put her foot to the brakes when a bird collided with her windshield, while another commenter said she noticed three dead birds lying on her deck.

Younger birds can not handle the toxins as well as older birds, local police chief Ty Techar said in a statement. "Luckily only one has passed on!"

Another local said: ' 'This explains why I have hit 7 birds with my auto this week'.

Those berries are filled with ethanol, with the substance causing birds to lose their inhibitions, just like human drunks, and pay less attention to potential obstacles or hazards. Some even "slur" their chirps.

"Furthermore, specific syllables, which have distinct acoustic structures, were differentially influenced by alcohol, likely reflecting a diversity in the neural mechanisms required for their production".

As for Gilbert's winged drunkards, "There's no need to call law enforcement about these birds as they should sober up within a short period of time", per the police statement, which adds that there are some bird-related occurrences that should be called in.
