As young Saga emerged from the waters, "she picked up the object, lifted it high above her head, and shouted as if she was Pippi Longstocking, 'DADDY!"

Saga Vanecek was skimming rocks at Vidöstern lake in Tånnö, Småland this summer when she made the "spectacular" discovery.

The Minnesota native, Saga Vanecek, initially thought it was a stick stuck at the bottom of the lake in Sweden. A local museum estimates that it's 1,500 years old.

The museum has said it does not know why the sword was in the water but further investigation of the lake resulted in "further prehistoric findings", including a costume which dates to 300 AD. "She said: "We need to get it preserved quickly, so it doesn't rust into dust". "Did someone fall overboard, or through the ice during a winter trek?"

"The sword is in total 85cm long and exceptionally well-preserved, including a scabbard made of wood and leather", it said.

Mr Vanecek, who moved to Sweden from Minnesota a year ago with Saga and Madeleine, his Swedish wife, said the family had to sit on their secret for two months until the find was officially announced this week by the local Jonkoping County Museum. Also found by researchers, who swore Saga and her family to secrecy until now so the site wouldn't be overrun by amateur excavators: a brooch from around the same time period as the sword, as well as an 18th-century coin, per MPR.

"We are very keen to see the conservation staff do their work and see more of the details of the sword", he was quoted as saying in the report.

Saga's father, who just relocated the family from Minnesota to Sweden, said the find had special significance because of the family's National Football League team. "At first we thought it could be graves situated nearby the lake, but we don't think that any more".
